High 5’s (and a medal) for Killer, an anti-poaching dog in Kruger

A little while ago I ventured into the Kruger National Park with Rhino Tears Wine and encountered some of the most awesome dogs I’ve ever seen. They are heavily involved in the fight against rhino poaching and are making a huge difference. How much of a difference? Here’s an extract from a piece I wrote about Killer, the most active and prolific of the dogs:

Two Mozambican poachers will spend 14 years in jail thanks to the “testimony” of an anti-poaching dog named Killer. Andolino Mulcube and Jermano Tive, both 20, were sentenced on Tuesday in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court after being convicted last month of killing two rhinos, and dehorning one of them, in Kruger National Park more than two years ago. It was Killer’s “almost flawless” sense of smell – along with the skill of his handler – that played a huge role in the convictions

It turns out that Killer received another accolade this week. From The Independent:

This particular pooch has been handed the most prestigious accolade an animal can receive. K9 Killer has been awarded the animal equivalent of the George Cross, the PDSA Gold Medal, for his bravery and devotion.

Well done, Killer. Well done.
