Former president Nelson Mandela is still in a “serious, but stable” condition, the South African government confirmed this afternoon.
In a statement issued by President Jacob Zuma’s office at about 2.30pm, it was confirmed that Mandela was still being treated at an undisclosed Pretoria hospital.
“Zuma last night, 10 June 2013, met with the medical team that is treating…Mandela, and they gave him a thorough briefing. The former President is still in a serious, but stable condition. President Zuma has full confidence in the medical team, and is satisfied that they are doing their best to make Madiba better,” the statement said.
Mandela was admitted to hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning with what an initial statement from Zuma’s office said was a recurrance of a lung infection that has affected him several times in the past few years.
