F1 hits the streets of Durban

Apparently there are some F1 vehicles going to be making some noise in Durban for the Top Gear Festival in a few weeks. I’m not an F1 fan in the least, but apparently some people are…

Below is the press release sent to me by the Top Gear organisers. It’s been unchanged.

It’s official – Top Gear Festival announced today (Thursday, May 10) that following their heroic win in the Chinese Grand Prix, the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team will be the celebrated guest F1 team at the Top Gear Festival in Durban this June.  For the first time ever, motoring fans will hear the screeching roar of a Formula 1 engine on the streets of Durban as the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS car takes pride of place on the Top Gear Festival street circuit.

Formula 1 fans should ensure they secure a prime viewing position on the 2.4 km street circuit to savour the electrifying F1 demonstrations, running throughout the weekend, driven by Sam Bird, GP2 winner and test driver for the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team.

Sam Bird commented: “I’m really looking forward to the Top Gear Festival and the opportunity to drive our Silver Arrow F1 car through the streets of Durban. Any event where the fans can really get close to the car and experience the noise and power for themselves is fantastic, and we’re all excited about travelling to South Africa in June. Everyone at the factory watches Top Gear regularly and I’m sure it will be a great event!”

Never far from the action Top Gear’s tame racing driver — the Stig — will be clocking up times on the Top Gear Festival leader board with some thrilling power laps in two of this year’s ultimate hypercars – a Lamborghini Aventador, the first of its kind to arrive on South African soil and a McLaren MP4/12.

This year’s Top Gear Festival in ‘the warmest place to be’ is expected to attract tens of thousands of petrol-heads keen to see the F1 for the first time in Durban; world famous presenters; guest drivers; legends and celebrities in action. Visitors are encouraged to book early so as not to miss the most exciting event on this year’s entertainment and motoring calendar.
