It’s fairly common knowledge that you can get drugs in Florida Road, Durban. Just park in one of the side streets, ask most car guards and they’ll point you in the right direction – in fact, some have been known to bring some of the drugs directly to you.
This morning, though, police believe they made an in-road in dealing with this problem. At about 2.30am they raided a flat in Philiso Court, situated in 8th Avenue, just off Florida Road. Police Captain Thulani Zwane told me one man was arrested with 1.1kg of heroin, ready for distribution. He was apparently the only person in the flat at the time of the incident.
Zwane said information was given to the police (obviously, he woudn’t say where this information came from) and the Organised Crime Unit went to the flat in the early hours of the morning. Some of the drugs were found in the man’s pockets, with others found inside a wardrobe. Its street value apparently exceeds R1-million.
Zwane said the man would “definitely” appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court this afternoon. A press statement will be issued after the court appearance, and I will update this post accordingly.
HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN?
In an unrelated story, Zwane said police are looking for Bongani Jele, who escaped from police custody in December. He was arrested in December in connection with a murder that took place in May last year. He was under police guard in hospital at the time of his escape.
Jele is from Ladysmith, KZN, and is 26-years-old. He is approximately 1,65 metres tall and police say he could be driving a silver-grey Toyota Corolla with Swaziland registration plates. However, Zwane said anyone who sees him should not approach him directly as he is “a dangerous man who is believed to be armed”.
Instead, he said the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Jabulani Mlangeni of the Utrecht Detective Services, should be contacted straight away. His numbers are 034 – 331 2000 or 083 318 4474.
