Election violence in KZN: candidate assaulted

Police statement just happened across my desk, saying that a candidate for the IFP in the Ndwedwe municipality was found badly beaten on a roadside this morning. This is the first confirmed police case of election violence reported on voting day.

The Ndwedwe Local Municipality forms part of the iLembe District Municipality, just north of the eThekwini Metro.

Very little information has been made available, apart from the brief police comment. I’m sure more information will be released soon. In the meantime, there is the police statement (unchanged, except for the officer’s phone number being removed):

SUBJECT:   IFP CANDIDATE IN NDWEDWE BRUTALLY ASSAULTED

On Tuesday 17 May at 07:30 children on route to school discovered the badly injured IFP candidate lying on the roadside in Mbuyeni Area, Ndwedwe.

Msawenkosi Mahlobo/Mgobhozi(53), an IFP candidate in the area was found with serious facial injuries and taken to a local hospital where is currently receiving treatment. Police at Ndwedwe are investigating a case of assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

A senior detective assigned to investigate the case is working around the clock to identify and arrest the person responsible for the assault.
