The last time there was such anti-South American sentiment in Africa was when…um… Okay, so there’s never been such a high level of anti-South American sentiment in Africa. We’re a sensitive bunch of people, us Africans. An injury to one is an injury to all, and all that jazz.
So when Uruguay cheated their way past Ghana (although Ghana should have scored the penalty after Suarez’s handball) in the World Cup quarter, Africa took it personally. The things that were said to and about Suarez and his team mates would have made Chuck Norris cry – and we all know that he NEVER cries. It didn’t matter who Uruguay were playing next, Africa would be behind their opposition.
And, man, did Africa celebrate when Nedtherlands won 3-2 in the semi-final in Cape Town tonight (that’s Tuesday, July 6, for those who’re reading this a little late). It was as if Ghana themselves had won the match. It was lovely.
To remix a song sung by the Australian fans on their way to the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban for their match against Germany on June 13: “Holland boys, we are here / Shag your women, drink your beer / With a knick-knack paddy whack, give a dog a bone / Piss off Uruguay, piss off home.”
And so Africa celebrated, and all thanks to the Dutch. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll forgive Jan van Riebiek. But probably not. He was a doos – just not as big a doos as Suarez.
